A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that we had begun trying to introduce and implement some flexible home school preschool rhythms around here and that we were starting out with a fun and simple preschool apple unit.

I’ve already shared some of our favorite apple books for preschoolers this Fall and today I’m sharing a fun parts of an apple activity we did during our apple unit plus some of the other activities we tried during our study.

We used this apple parts activity to not only learn and talk about the parts of an apple, but also to practice scissor cutting skills and glue skills since much of it is a cut and paste activity.  And we don’t wasted a good fine motor opportunity around here!

This parts of an apple activity for preschoolers and kindergarten is a great apple themed cut and paste activity. Great way to incorporate fine motor skills into your apple units. #appleunitstudy #appletheme #preschoollessonplans

In case you missed it, we’re using Busy Toddler’s Playing Preschool curriculum as a loose guide for our home school preschool at least for now.  My youngest isn’t quite ready for all the material, and my oldest is much farther advanced than most of it, but still enjoys many of the suggested activities to reinforce what he already knows.

I like it because it provides a simple and manageable structure for me to start from when it comes to planning our activities.  And having pre-planned themes for the year is incredibly helpful.

Parts of An Apple Cut and Paste Activity

Admittedly, the inspiration for this activity came from an evening of searching for apple activities on Pinterest.  (And if you do the same, you’ll be sure to find about 2,483 versions of similar activities.)

But, here’s how we did our parts of an apple project and it worked out easily enough for us.

Supplies

  • Red, Green, Black, and White construction paper
  • Another piece of paper to glue the apple to
    • We used an off-white piece of card stock we had on hand, but any non-apple color should work.
    • We decided not to use white copy paper so that our apple core was also white to allow it to stand out.
  • Parts of an apple diagram FREE PRINTABLE
  • Children’s Scissors
  • Glue
    • Glue sticks or liquid school glue will work.  We used liquid glue for the extra muscle control of squeezing the bottle and controlling where the glue went.  Glue sticks would have been less messy, but since this was a one-on-one activity over here, we didn’t mind the extra mess.
  • Marker
    • We used brown so we could draw the stem rather than cutting out a tiny little stem.  Color is totally optional, though.

How to Make Your Apple Parts Diagram

Before we got started, I prepped this activity by cutting out all the “parts” to our apple.  I free-cut a red circle, then trimmed it in half and “shaped” it a little bit for our apple.  Then cut the rest of the parts.

To make it simpler for you, I’ve drawn all the parts of an apple you need here so all you need to do is download and trace to make your own.

For parents/teachers:

  1. Prep activity by cutting out all the parts of the apple first.  You should cut the apple in half horizontally to make room for the core and seeds.
  2. Set up a finished example for children to model their own diagram from.
    1. I actually just set it up not glued for my son and he picked up each piece to glue down.  For a classroom, or multiple children, I HIGHLY recommend making your own diagram ahead of time so it can be displayed for all the children to see as a model.
  3. Make sure each child has labels for their apple parts: flesh, skin, core, seeds, stem, leaf (included in printable for your convenience).
    1. You can cut these out ahead of time to save time, or allow children to cut them out.
    2. I let my son use these to practice using scissors.  I intentionally did not include boxes around the words, rather just spaced them out a lot since we are just learning to use scissors properly and let him free cut his words out.

For kids:

  1. Starting with the core, allow children to glue their apple parts to their paper.
  2. Try to allow for some freedom in order of the parts they choose to glue next and in which order, but encourage them to use your diagram as their guide.
    1. We glued to core, then the top and bottom of the apple, seeds, leaf, stem (to be fair, we just drew the stem).
  3. Glue apple part labels to identify each part of your apple.

Apple activity for preschool

And viola!

We had a blast with this one.  We got to talk about not only the parts of an apple, but what a diagram was, and some new vocabulary.
