How to Make a DIY M&M Costume in Less Than 15 Minutes

You read that right.  Once you have your supplies, these M&M costumes can be made in less than 15 minutes.

True story – my sister made a last minute decision last year to swing by (without a costume) and join us for trick-or-treating.  She brought over a solid tee and we made her costume in about 5 minutes after dinner and before going out.  It’s that easy.

Supplies

  • Solid color shirt(s)
    • The basic colors for M&M candies are: brown, orange, red, green, yellow, and blue. Depending on how many you have in your family or group, everyone can just choose their favorite color for their shirt.
    • You can often get these at your local craft store.
  • Iron-on transfer paper for dark fabrics
    • Make sure you get the transfer paper for dark fabrics so your “m” will be bright and white just like the candy!
    • You can also cut the letter out of white felt, or make a vinyl transfer with a Cricut or something similar.  But, the iron-on paper is what we used and it was EASY PEASY.
  • Pen or marker
  • Lower case letter “m” stencil

How to Make an M&M Costume: Directions

  1.  Create your “logo” by printing a lower case “m” from MS Word onto a piece of regular copy paper.  This will be the stencil for your iron on.  We used the lower case “m” bolded in Rockwell Condensed font at 600 px.
    1. Make sure to follow the printing instructions on your iron-on paper – some will require images be mirror imaged, and some will not.
  2. Carefully cut out your “m” stencil and trace onto your iron on paper (don’t print directly onto your iron on paper, or your “m” will not be white.
  3. Follow instructions on iron-on transfer paper and iron “m” into the center of each shirt.
    1. Depending on the size of your shirts (especially if you are making these for infants, you might need to adjust the size of the letter m. That said, we’ve used this same one for size 12 months to adult XL.

And that’s it.  Since the shirt is really the costume, you can wear any pants you want.  I’m opting for athletic leggings, Hubs is wearing soccer pants, and the boys are wearing whatever pants they choose.

This M&M’s costume is a such a fun and easy Halloween costume for groups and families!  It’s easy to pull together last minute and since it’s just a t-shirt, your kids can enjoy wearing it again and again!

  3. So easy and simple, well done. I would have never thought of that. My kids are going as a pumpkin and a leprechaun this year. Can’t believe it’s almost the end of October, how did that happen?!

  4. This is such a cute and easy idea! Love it!

  5. So cute. I wanted the kids to be M & M’s when they were younger or Thing 1 and Thing 2 from “The Cat In The Hat,” but could never convince them to do it.
