Our simple, no fuss Christmas home tour! See how we’re keeping our Christmas decorations simple, but still festive in our home this year.

Who else is counting down the days until Christmas? We’ve been kind of counting down really since October over here.  Well, at least our oldest has.  I don’t know what it is about Christmas this year, but he has been SO EXCITED.  Telling me multiple times about how Christmas is his favorite holiday, how he can’t wait until Christmas, all the things he wants to do for Christmas (enter our Christmas bucket list…), and so on.

And his excitement has rubbed off on me.  Frankly, it makes me want to decorate every square inch of our home and turn it into a magical Christmas wonderland.

But in all honesty, I much prefer to keep it simple when it comes to decorating for Christmas, so that’s what we do around here.

Our Simple, Kid-Friendly Christmas Decorations Christmas Home Tour. Lots of easy, simple Christmas decoration ideas for families with small children!

A Little Bit of Transparency about this Christmas Home Tour

About a month ago, I sat down and jotted down lots of content ideas for this space over the next several months.  Things I wanted to share, write about, etc.  Because homemaking is so much a part of my everyday life, it’s something that I want to incorporate here on the blog more frequently.  (Don’t get me wrong, we still LOVE our crafts over here, but there is a lot more that goes on in our home, too and I’ve been itching to share some of that with y’all.)

And so, a Christmas home tour felt like a natural fit for this month.  But then I put up our simple Christmas decorations.  And even though my oldest was THRILLED (proof that he doesn’t need the whole magical wonderland to be excited about Christmas), when I looked on social media, I felt a little bit less than excited to share it.

It’s perfect for our family and our season, but is it worthy of sharing on the internet?  Does anyone actually care about our Christmas decorations?

Ugh. Comparison is such a silly and non-helpful thing.

BUT, then my friend Keri reached out to me and asked me to join her Christmas Home Tour hop this year and it was just the little nudge that I needed to get this show on the road.

Our Simple Christmas Home Tour

We tend to decorate primarily in our living room and kitchen for the holidays.  Those are the places we spend most of our time, so it makes sense to spend the most time decorating those spaces.

I do have a few things here and there throughout other spots, but this is where I spend most of my decorating energy.

The Living Room

The living room gets the bulk of our Christmas decorations.  It’s got our tree, throw pillows, and our mantel decorations, which we just love.

It’s also got our stockings (kind of draped over the back of the couch because I haven’t committed to how I want to hang them yet…)

Stockings almost visible on the left side of the couch. They’re draped with care, at least.

Our Christmas Tree

A fun story about our tree – I never meant for it to be “our tree” in the first place.  When Hubs and I were first married, I excitedly bought a Christmas tree on clearance.  It was 7.5 feet tall (fine, because our living room is two-story), but about 100 feet in circumference around the bottom.  I’m exaggerating, but still, it was big.

I never even thought to look at the tree’s circumference.  I just cared how tall it was.  Add to that, each branch was individual – meaning that every year, we found ourselves rearranging furniture and adding in branch by branch to our huge tree.

I had to buy filler ornaments (which were not even shatter-proof because my pre-kid self had no idea what she was doing, apparently) to make it look full.  And frankly, it was so much work.

So, one year, we scrapped it.  We grabbed this smaller, 6 foot slim tree that comes in 3 easy sections from Target on Black Friday.  It was probably $25 and I told Hubs that I liked it fine, but it would probably be moved to the kitchen or somewhere less prominent in future years.

Because I just KNEW we’d get a bigger tree again.  Still a slimmer tree, but for sure a taller tree. Or maybe even a real tree.

But then a magical thing happened.  We put our new, smaller, simple tree together.  And IT WAS A BREEZE.  It fit in the corner perfectly.  We only had to move the end table out of the way.

I only filled it with ornaments that we loved.  Ornaments from travel, things we’d made, or specifically picked out, and now ornaments that the boys have made.

We passed down lots of our filler ornaments.  And our little tree represents us.

I added the chunky, wired Christmas ribbon layered with burlap to the tree last year, which I think adds a fun element of cheer and we just use a Christmas themed fleece blanket as a tree skirt.

So, we’re keeping this tree until it falls a part, I’m pretty sure.

Our Christmas Mantel

Right beside the tree is our fire place and mantel.  Just like our tree, it’s full of little things that feel cozy and festive to me.  The Merry Christmas garland is from Target a couple of years ago the day after Christmas and even though the letters are felt, it has held up really well over the years.

The nutcracker belongs to my oldest.  My dad has a ton of nutcrackers and one big one in their kitchen that the boys love to play with, so Little got his own nutcracker last year and we always love to bring him down for the season!

The poinsettias are new this year (and real).  Picked out by Little to celebrate a positive trip to the allergy doctor for his little brother back in November.  He wanted to get flowers for me and settled on the “Christmas flowers”.

Now, both boys like to take turns watering them and it is the sweetest.

Easy Christmas Mantel Decorations

This little house has twinkle lights and is from Target’s dollar spot this year, the tree is from the dollar spot maybe 2 years ago.  Mason jar from my Grandmother’s house, sticks from our backyard.  Pine cones came from a wreath we had several years ago when we were first married.

This little deer is one of my FAVORITE decorations.  It’s wooden with metal overlay and I think the pattern reminds me of a cozy sweater?  I picked it up last year from Joann’s Fabrics and just enjoy putting him out so much.

The Kitchen

We have an eat-in kitchen, which I just love.  Lots of space to entertain and eat our family meal together right in the same space.

For the Christmas, we just change out our table runner to a bright, festive red one and add a fabric Christmas tree that my Grandmother made years and years ago.

Simple Christmas decorations for dining room

I REALLY wanted to hang mini-wreaths from the cabinet doors this year, but never found any that I loved.  I actually did buy some and then returned them because they weren’t as pretty as I thought once I got them home.  Maybe next year.

Handmade Christmas Tree
I mean, how sweet?! And kid-friendly so it’s a keeper around here.

We added this chifferobe cabinet to the kitchen this year (the white cabinet above) and it is one of my favorite surfaces to decorate.  My dad actually refinished it for us since it was my mom’s grandmother’s originally.  It usually holds our glass cake platter & some white serving dishes and I added a few small decorations from Target this year and I just LOVE how it turned out!

Simple Christmas Decorations for the Kitchen

And a Christmas candle because we just love cozy candles around here.  I picked this one up (and the “Merry” towels) from HomeGoods this year and am glad for it.

It’s not fancy.  But I present it without apology or reservation.  If anything sharing it makes me even more contented and grateful for it.

This is home.
