Happy Thanksgiving Week, friends!  I mentioned last week how we’re just squeezing the last little bit of Fall out before we get ready to dive head first into all things Christmas around here.

So today, I’ve got one last fall activity for you for this year – a fun fall leaf craft for toddlers and preschoolers.  Wow.  The last fall craft for the year sounds so final, but here we are, I guess.

This really has been a fun season around here.  And truth be told, our yard is officially covered in leaves, so while we’re getting ready to move on to the Christmas season officially next week, there is still lots of fall to be had (or raked up, I should say) around here.

This fall leaf sun catcher craft was just like all the best activities – unplanned and spur of the moment.  But it turned out so pretty and it was SO easy to do, I wanted to share it in case you’re looking for another fun activity to do with your kids this fall.

These fall leaf sun catchers are the perfect, easy fall leaf craft for toddlers and preschoolers. Using just leaves from your yard and contact paper, they are a great way to celebrate Fall with your kids! How to Make a Fall Leaf Sun Catcher: Fun Fall Activity for Preschoolers

I got the idea for this craft recently while taking the boys for an afternoon walk.  I was hoping to show them all the beautiful fall colors that have taken over the neighborhood, but we decided to collect leaves instead.

And y’all already know I love a good contact paper craft – I literally keep a roll on hand in the craft cabinet at all times just for these spur of the moment crafts.  (We actually opened a brand new roll just for these sun catchers!)

What You Need:

  • Various colored and shaped leaves.
    • Just pick whichever ones you think look pretty on your walk.  We looked for different colors, bright colors, and different shapes.
  • Clear Contact Paper
  • Scissors

Directions:

  • Collect fallen leaves
    • Look for leaves that are dry, but not dried out and crunchy yet.
    • Inspect leaves for bugs or anything yucky before using them.
  • Cut a large piece of contact paper
    • (You’ll use half of this for your leaves and the other half to fold over)
  • Remove the backing from the contact paper

  • Stick the leaves onto half of the contact paper
    • Leave a small margin from the outside of the paper for sealing
  • Fold the empty half of the contact paper over the leaves and press to seal

  • Tape your sun catchers in a window that gets lots of sun
  • Enjoy the fall colors and shapes!

I’ll be totally honest, I figured this would be a fun, quick craft for Little that we’d keep around for a few days before tossing.  But they are so pretty when the sun shines through them, I’m actually planning to keep them up as long as we can.

I agree! I always make sure to have a roll on hand in our craft cabinet!

  2. I used to do stuff like this with my kids when they were little. We made a massive tree collage on the kitchen door one year and it stayed there until spring

  4. Mary Leigh, you make me want to have children all over again! We did this when the kids were small, and so many creative things. I loved every opportunity to help my kids learn and play, and so many times, I miss it. It is in the simplest things that we find the greatest joy in raising our children. Loved this!
