Father’s Day Interview for Kids: All About My Daddy

My husband is not a gift person.  Big, elaborate gifts are just not his thing.  But – something special and thoughtful, especially from the kid always means a lot to him.

And whether or not we do gifts creating thoughtful traditions to help us celebrate holidays and one another is important to me.

So in an attempt to create something meaningful and special while avoiding adding another thing to our home, I created this Father’s Day Interview for the boys to do.

We started using these questions when my oldest was 3.5 years old and have been using it since!

My husband loves it.  Looking back at Father’s Day Interviews from years past is always fun, too.

Printable Father’s Day Interview Questions

We had so much fun with the Father’s Day interview last year, I decided to create a printable version to share.

Tips for Interviewing Your Children

Of course, the success of this Father’s Day gift really relies on your child’s willingness to participate.  Here are my best tips for interviewing your children.

1. Make It Exciting

Explain what you are doing in a fun and exciting way.  “Hey! Father’s Day is coming up!  Let’s make something special for Daddy!  I’m going to ask you a few questions about Daddy and you tell me what you think!”

They will be excited if you are excited!

2. Pick the Right Time

This is a great activity to do over lunch, after breakfast, or any other time your child isn’t already engaged in their own play.

They’ll be more willing to participate if they aren’t being pulled away from something else.

3. Encourage Them by Celebrating Their Answers

The beauty of this Father’s Day activity is that there are not any wrong answers.  You are simply trying to capture what your child thinks in their current stage.

You can say something like, “That is silly, I bet Daddy will think that is funny!”  or “That sounds really fun!”  You can also say, “You’re right – Daddy really does like that, doesn’t he!”

Again, the more excited you are about it, the more excited your kids will be too.

4. If they Don’t Have an Answer, Just Skip It

Younger kids might not have an answer for all the questions.  It’s totally fine to skip questions.

The whole fun of this is in the process, anyway and I bet Dad will love it no matter what.

5. Don’t Forget to Record It

Don’t forget to write down their answers just as they give them!

For an extra bit of fun, set up your camera to record their answers.  It is always so sweet to be able to go back and HEAR their answers in their own words.

A Fun Father’s Day Tradition

My favorite part of this whole thing is that it’s still a great gift year after year!  Save each year’s interview in a folder or binder to be able to look back on.
