Happy [almost] Spring, friends!

I don’t know about you, but as soon as the temperature hits 70 degrees more than 2 days in a row, my mind is on Spring.

We’re ready to GET OUTSIDE, feel the sun shine on our skin, and take advantage of the extra daylight that the season has to offer.  This season especially, I’ve been thinking of fun activities that we can do together during the week and as a family.  And so, I’ve put together this fun spring bucket list this year.

It’s full of simple, budget friendly (mostly free or low-cost), but really fun spring activities that the whole family will enjoy.  It’s a great list of spring activities for families with young children, since many of the activities can easily be adapted for babies through preschool – but are still fun for older kids, too.

I’ve made it printable, too – so you can easily print your own Spring bucket list.

Spring Bucket List for Families

This is our actual bucket list for this Spring.  Of course, there are many more activities you could add, but these are the things we’re hoping to do as a family this spring.

1. Plant flowers & watch them bloom

One of the most exciting parts of spring is getting to see things in bloom.  Flowers are budding, the leaves are coming back on the trees, and new grass is coming up in the backyard.

What better way to experience this first hand, than to get to plant your own seeds and watch them bloom.

2. Take a day trip

Pick a nearby town or attraction and head out for the day with the family.  I use the phrase day trip loosely here as day trip with a preschooler and toddler can just as easily be a long morning adventure, or a full day out with the family.

Spring is a great time to explore a new place or revisit a favorite place as a family.

3. Visit the playground

We will be doing this often.  Take advantage of your local playgrounds.  It’s a great way to get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and meet new friends.

Depending on where you live, you can try to make a point to try out new playgrounds you haven’t visited before.

4. Go for a walk (or many walks)

Enjoy the warm weather (and the longer days) by getting outside and going for a walk.  This is a really great tradition to start as a family for after dinner, or during the weekend mornings.

It’s good exercise for everyone and it’s a great way to meet your neighbors after being stuck inside all winter long.

You can also visit local walking trails or parks to take a more scenic walk, if you’d like!

5. Have a picnic

Speaking of heading to the park, pack your lunch (or dinner) and make it a picnic!

Our boys LOVE when we get to eat outside for a picnic – it’s always so special for them.  You can do this at home in your own backyard, or a local park.

One of our favorite things to do when the weather is nice is take the boys to the playground on Friday evenings to play and then finish the night up with a picnic dinner before heading home.  We call it our “Fun Family Friday” and it always makes us all so happy.

Looking for some free fun with your little one? Pack up lunch and head to the playground!

6. Visit a local ice cream shop

Every season is ice cream season as far as I’m concerned, but there is something special about when it finally warms up enough to get ice cream and enjoy it outside.

Head to your local ice cream shop and pick up some home made ice cream to enjoy outdoors.  (Or grab an ice cream maker and make your own ice cream as a family!)

7. Color with chalk

This is a go-to around here.  We always have sidewalk chalk ready for playing outside and both boys love it.

Get creative by drawing pictures and patterns, making up driveway games, or practice writing letters and designs.  It’s so simple, but so much fun!

8. Blow bubbles

Bubbles are always a hit around here.  We really like the long tubes of bubbles for blowing and I’ve got a bubble machine on my wish list for rainy days inside because we use bubble so often.

A great no-spill bubble dispenser is also a great way to let kids get to blow their own bubbles without spilling them everywhere.

9. Dye eggs

Dying eggs is a fun Easter tradition that kids love!  Pick up an egg dying kit and spend an afternoon creating your egg-cellent masterpieces.  😉

Or, if you want to go a more natural route, my friend Bethany has a great post on how to dye eggs naturally that she made at home with her kids last year (and they turned out GORGEOUS).

10. Egg hunt

Egg hunts are perfect for indoors or outdoors.  And Little asks to do egg hunts for about a month (at least) after Easter every year – so we keep the eggs out for playing for a LONG TIME.

11. Visit the farmer’s market

Spring is also a really great time to visit your local farmer’s market.  You can even let you kids help pick out produce to buy and have them help clean it and cook it when you get home!

12. Splash in puddles

Because what’s Spring without some rainy days?  Thankfully, since the weather is warmer, you can still get outside and play even in the rain.

Pull on some rain boots and grab your rain jacket and get to splashing.

(These are the rain jackets our boys have and we LOVE how lightweight they are for the warmer months!)

13. Collect rain

Let your kids play meteorologists and set up a jar outside to collect the rain as it’s falling.  Once it’s stopped, let them measure how much rain you got.  You can even keep a journal of different rainfalls throughout the season and compare them.

14. Fly a kite

Truth be told, I don’t even know how to fly a kite, but we have one that we’ve been saving for Little to use and I think we’re going to try it this Spring!

So, if you know how to fly a kite, do it!  And if you don’t – this Spring is a good time to try to learn!

15. Find a rainbow

After the rain comes a rainbow, right?  Well, if it’s sunny enough afterwards – and in the Spring, it often is!  Keep your eyes open for rainbows and see how many you can spot this season.

A quick note on family bucket lists – there are always more things you can add to the list.  And every family’s list will be a little different.  That’s fine.

The whole point of creating a family bucket list is to take some time to intentionally think about things that you’d like to do as a family in a given season and make a plan to do them.

It’s not about doing the most elaborate things or going to far away places (although, it might include some of those things).

It’s about creating memories together.  About putting aside all the other things, turning our phones off, and being present with one another.

So, this is our family’s Spring Bucket List.

I hope it gives you some easy ideas for your own list this Spring.

Ha! My thoughts are turning to spring too but I’m not sure we’ve even reach the 60’s yet. Funny how in New England 60 in spring is like sweatshirt weather but in fall it’s the coming of winter and we bundle up. It’s all about perspective I guess! We can not wait to get outside more.. I did not think to add ice cream to our bucket list but I know we’ll be eating plenty of that. Pinned.

I’ve thought about this too – it really is all about perspective! Hopefully it warms up there soon! We might need to escape the summer heat and head up to New England once it gets so hot here!

  6. I’m so glad it is almost Spring so we can do all these wonderful things again. Thank you for this great list!
