These pom pom mittens are a fun and easy craft for kids to celebrate winter!  They are versatile, easy to put together without lots of mess, and a great way to practice fine motor skills! It’s perfect for preschool aged kids, but simple enough that younger siblings can make their own, too if you’d like.  Of course, older siblings can also participate!

We’ve actually had a pretty mild winter here in North Carolina this year.  A couple of weekends ago, it got close to 70 degrees out – but this past weekend and week are making up for it…definitely still winter around here.

But still, my mind has been far far from winter crafts for preschool since 1) it hasn’t consistently felt like winter; and 2) we are working on some organization and decluttering projects around here for the new year.

But, because we love to do fun, seasonal crafts around here, I knew we wanted to do a winter craft for January.

And after reading this book from our local library, I though mittens would be a fun project to work on.  It would also be a fun craft to do along with this classic children’s book.

How to Make Pom Pom Mittens: A Fun Winter Craft for Preschoolers

Like I mentioned before (and in almost all my craft posts), the kids’ crafts we do around here tend to stay simple and fun, but easy enough to put together with materials mostly on hand in our craft cabinet, and versatile enough for Little to be able to express his own creativity and make some artistic decisions himself.

(Typing that last part mostly as a reminder to myself how important it is to direct less and let Little explore more when we’re crafting…so in case you need a reminder like me, these mittens are a good project for that.)

Pom Pom Mittens Supplies

Directions

When I say these are super simple, I mean SUPER simple.

  • Draw a pair of mittens onto your construction paper.
  • Allow your child to decorate the mittens how they please using glue and pom poms, stickers, markers, glitter glue or whatever you have on hand.
  • Once all the glue is dried from decorating, glue the string to the back of the mittens to connect them.

I originally thought that Little might like to use stickers to make his mittens craft, but he only wanted to use glitter glue, glue, and pom poms.  And I LOVE the way they turned out.  We hung them up in our kitchen on the bulletin board so we see them each day.

This was a really fun winter craft to make together.  Little loved choosing the colors he wanted to use on his mittens and he loves seeing them hanging on our kitchen bulletin board!

Pom Pom Mittens are a fun winter craft for kids! Great pom pom craft can go along with many winter books for your winter preschool themes! Practice color recognition and fine motor skills! Free mitten template included.

For homeschooling families, or if you just want to add some mitten themed reading to your project, I’ve rounded up some related books below that will go along well with this craft!  You can grab them on Amazon below, or check at your local library.
