Happy Monday, friends!  It seems like small talk to say that I can’t believe how quickly time is flying by this year.  But I really cannot believe how quickly it’s going by.  My sweet big boy is turning 3 way sooner than I’d like to acknowledge and my baby will be 7 months old this month.  Be still my heart.

I just emailed our wedding photographer last week to see if we can get some professional family photos squeezed into his schedule before my babies aren’t babies anymore.

But, I digress.

I’m really excited about today’s post – our Date Night In Box review.

We received this Date Night In Box for review.  All opinions and experiences are mine alone. This post contains affiliate links.  That means that I will earn a commission if you click through and make purchases through those links. Please see disclosure for more information.

I don’t think I need to tell you that being parents changes the way you date your spouse.  And our marriage was no exception.  In fact, I think that has been the hardest thing for me in terms of transitioning from one to two kids – finding quality time with Hubs where we can have time to relax, talk, and just enjoy spending time together.  [I’ll probably write a whole blog post on this at some point because it has definitely not been easy, but we’ve had some really sweet moments and lots of learning opportunities in this season, too.]

And so, we tried Date Night In Box and my only regret is that we didn’t try it sooner.

Date Night In Box

Date Night In Box is essentially a pre-planned date that comes to your mailbox each month with a new, fun theme.  And when I say pre-planned, I mean they’ve thought of everything you need to bring a full date night right into your home.  Each box comes with a themed date night guide that has a suggested menu and recipes, activities, snacks, conversation starters, and a specially curated Spotify playlist for the night.

The July box was the “Aloha Box” and it was all things Hawaii.

What’s In the Box?

Date Night In Boxes really do think of everything for your date.  The Aloha box included:

  • Date Night In Guide
    • Literally, a step by step guide for EVERYTHING – Hawaiian menu, game instructions, “table talk” conversation starters, link to themed Spotify playlist (that I’m still listening to), a quick language lesson to learn some romantic Hawaiian phrases, and themed movie suggestions for later.  See?  Everything.
  • Lei
  • The most beautifully scented candle from Northern Lights Candle and I am not exaggerating.  I have told Hubs multiple times how much I love the candle.
  • Aloha BINGO cards & game pieces
  • “Lei it on Me” game + 2 pencils
  • Konane (Hawaiian checkers) game board and pieces
  • Sweet Maui Onion Potato Chips
  • 2 Tropical themed plastic cups + paper straws
  • Tropical Cocktail/Mocktail drink mixes from Minute Mixology

Our Date Night In

To be totally honest, we skipped the suggested menu.  It looked tasty, but Hubs is somewhat picky, I didn’t already have the ingredients on hand, and I didn’t want to eat a full meal after the boys went to bed.  We also saved the chips for later – and I ended up eating them.

We used the Date Night In Guide to walk us through the date for the most part.  First, we had some fun trying our hand at some Hawaiian phrases – and got plenty of laughs out of that before moving onto the games part of the box.

These were our favorites.

The first game we played was called Lei it on Me and it was my favorite from the box.  Essentially, each person got a set of cards and had to fill in their answer and then a consequence if the other guessed it wrong.

We took turns guessing what each other wrote for each of the questions.  I can honestly say that I have not laughed so hard in a while.

I was surprised at some of the things we both guessed correctly.  And it was really fun to see what consequences we each chose.  A nice reminder that Hubs likes massages and I like someone else to do the dishes sometimes – and watch a show with me every now and then.

Next, we moved to Konane – the Hawaiian checkers game.  It’s very similar to checkers in that you move forward by skipping the other player, but it’s different in that each person has pieces scattered over the board and it doesn’t matter how many of your opponent’s pieces you take – you just don’t want to be stuck without being able to make a move.  This was a fun mix of strategy and competition, which is always fun.

I’ve even started teaching this game to Little and Hubs and I have played it again as well. Now, I just want to figure out a good way to preserve the board so we can keep playing it.

Finally, we played Aloha BINGO.  Or, I should say we started this game and saved the rest for later because it was getting late.  But, I thought this was a really fun way to end the date.

Our Overall Thoughts on the Date Night In Box

To be honest, I was really hesitant about the idea of a subscription box for date night.  It seemed a little bit cheesy and I wasn’t sure how we would like it.  Even before we got it though, Hubs I agreed that not matter the theme or what the activities were, that we would embrace it and really make the most of it to enjoy our time together.

And like I said, I can’t believe we waited so long to try it.  I’m already looking forward to this month’s date.

It was fun to do something “out of the box” (see what I did there?) that we wouldn’t usually do.  It was fun to be reminded of how much we enjoy playing games and spending time together.  And it was really fun to just laugh with Hubs.

Finally, it was really great to not even have to leave the house.  We just put the boys to bed and came right back downstairs to our date.

If you’ve never thought of a subscription box for date night or if you’ve thought about it, and are on the fence – I encourage you to give it a shot.  I really don’t think you’ll regret it.

Why You Should Try Date Night In Box for Yourself

Like I said, I was on the fence about this too – until I actually tried it and now I’m hooked.  Here’s why.

Date Night In Box is a Built-In Date Every Month

Remember the days of weekly date nights that you could count on?  Me too.  And while I’d always love to have more time to date Hubs, life happens y’all.  The days go by so quickly and it can be difficult to carve out specific, intentional, one on one time together.

Date Night In Box makes it SO EASY.  Everything is right in the box and it’s delivered right to your doorstep.  If you follow the suggested menu, you’ll need to buy groceries, but that’s totally optional.

You can even break up parts of it and spread the date night over multiple nights.  We’ve definitely played those games again since our first date night.

Date Night In Box is Fun

It’s just really fun to intentionally reconnect with your spouse.  The games are light hearted, but fun.  They made us laugh and allowed us to have fun but important conversations.  It’s just really good to be able to enjoy one another’s company.

Date Night In Box Doesn’t Require a Babysitter

I think this is self-explanatory.  Just put those sweet little babies to bed and enjoy a night in.  It is so convenient.

Date Night In Box is an Investment in Your Marriage

Most importantly, Date Night In Boxes are an investment in your marriage.  Each box is $34.99 (month to month) – or you can subscribe and get a discount (choose from a 3 month, 6 month, or annual subscription) – that’s cheaper for sure than going out to dinner and getting a babysitter.  And it’s definitely cheaper than going out to the movies these days (if you plan to get any kind of concessions).

This was the part that caused me to wait so long to begin with.  I wanted to know if this is something that I really thought was WORTH spending money on.  Because let’s face it – I can say, “Oh, it’s just $34.99”.  But the fact is, that’s still money.

BUT – here is why I ultimately think it’s worth it.

That $34.99 says this: “Our marriage is important.  Spending time with one another is valuable.  I enjoy trying new things and having fun with you.  Sure, life is busy.  Especially with kids.  But, I want to go on a date with you.”

And those are really important things to say.  And frankly, I think it is one of the most romantic things when Hubs asks me out on a date.  Just saying.

Also, if you spend money up front on the date, you are WAY more likely to carve out the time to make it happen.

You would really love it. It’s definitely affordable compared to going out and getting a sitter, and I’m way more likely to do it if we’ve already paid for it. And it was so fun to do something different!
