Just like that, summer keeps right on moving and I cannot believe that we are already talking about the 4th of July!  But, here we are.  Today, I want to share a really simple patriotic craft that we did here recently as we get ready to celebrate Independence Day.

If you’ve been around here for any amount of time, you know that my favorite crafts for kids are those that are inexpensive, simple to prep, and easy to clean up.  This craft meets all of those.

And no, you do not have to be super artsy or creative to put it together.  Another perk?  You probably already have most of the supplies at home.

I think it took me about 15 minutes to put this project together for Little and we did it for our morning activity while baby brother was sleeping.

Red, White, & Blue Stars: A Fun Patriotic Craft for Kids

You’ll recognize this as similar to some of the other crafts we’ve done around here, because it is so easy and versatile.  And we try to not mess with a good thing around here.

Supplies

  • Contact Paper
    • I buy a big roll of this and just keep in on hand in my craft cabinet because it is SO easy to use for crafts.
  • Red, White, & Blue tissue paper, cut into pieces
    • You only really need to cut about 1/8 of the piece of tissue paper
  • Permanent Marker
  • Scissors

Directions

  • If you haven’t already, use scissors to cut tissue paper into small squares.
    • I only used about 1/8 of a sheet of each color for this project.  It’s always fine to have more, but you’ll likely have some left overs for your next craft.
  • Use a permanent marker to draw stars on the contact paper.
    • These don’t have to be perfect to work.
  • Cut stars out and remove the paper backing from the contact paper.
  • Stick tissue paper to the star.
    • It really is that simple.  We put our star on a red piece of construction paper to help see it better since it’s clear.
    • There really is no rhyme or reason to how you put the tissue paper on, either so this is great for lots of ages.  In fact, Little thought it would be best to take the tissue paper by the hand full and “dump” it on then shake off the excess.

  • Fold over tissue paper that’s hanging over the edges back onto the sticky part.
  • Stick your finished stars onto a separate piece of contact paper and cut the excess.
And that’s it.

Depending on how old your kids are, I think it would also be fun to use glitter for some extra sparkle.  Of course, then I might need to recount what I said about this being easy to clean up.
