2016 was a really good year for us.  I quit my day job and started staying home with Little.  This is my favorite job.  Now that we’re in a new year, I’ve been spending some time thinking about what my goals will be for 2017.  I am a list maker, so I will eventually get to writing some things down.  Hubs and I will write out some concrete goals for our family.  That said, I have one more overarching goal for this year that I’d like to share.  Think of this as my version of the word of the year.

For me, this year’s theme is: Come & See

This is something that stuck out to me and hasn’t left as I was recently reading along with the She Reads Truth girls in their current study of John.  In Chapter 1, Jesus is calling his disciples.  He calls a man named Philip from Bethsaida who then goes and finds another man, Nathanael.  Philip tells his friend, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph” (John 1:45).  Nathanael skeptically responds in the next verse – “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip then simply invites him to “Come and see” (John 1:46).

Nathanael does and in the next verses he meets Jesus and believes.

I was so struck by this for a number of reasons – Philip’s seeking out his friend to share the good news – and his simple response when Nathanael was skeptical.  He invited his friend to just come and see for himself.  Jesus did the rest.  Nathanael believed because he met Jesus – not because Philip was eloquent.

And so, this year I am praying that I will be able to over and over again come and see.  I pray that God will open my eyes to the gifts around me.  Even when I respond like Nathanael.  Can anything good come out of __________?”  May I come and see that the Lord is good.  And having done so, will I like Philip share that good news with those around me?  I hope that there are lots of wonderful and fun and good things in 2017 and that I will see God in all of those.  But I also hope that whatever hardships (or more often, minor inconveniences, frustrations, annoyances) come for me to put in that blank above, that I will also be able to come back and see clearly.

Will you join me in this?  I don’t know what your blank is where you may be asking can anything good come from this?  Join me.  Come & see.  Let us come and see and earnestly seek to meet with God on the mountain tops and in the valleys.  He’s there and he’s working all the things for our ultimate good.  He is trustworthy.

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!  Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! -Psalm 34:8

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for all those who are called according to his purpose. -Romans 8:28
