If you’ve been around here for any length of time, you know that I am a HUGE fan of felt boards.  We go to story time at the library at least once per week, so I am always getting new ideas for our felt board at home.  I love that felt boards are so versatile, they store so easily, and there are endless themes and stories that you can use with them.  (To make your own, budget friendly, super easy felt board, check out this tutorial.)

In our house, we have a felt Christmas tree, an alphabet set, numbers set, and shapes set.  I bought both the letters and numbers from Target’s dollar spot along with some felt vehicles that Little calls his “things that go.”  I’ve been wanting to add more to our collection, but hadn’t gotten around to it. This is partly due to simple procrastination, but mostly due to the incorrect assumption that making these sets would take a lot of time that I didn’t have.

I could not have been more wrong.  I made this sweet little Itsy Bitsy Spider set in less than 30 minutes.  Today, I want to show you how.

Itsy Bitsy Spider Felt Storyboard Set

If your kids are anything like Little, they love the itsy bitsy spider.  Why that spider keeps climbing up the water spout is beyond me, but he does and so we will sing about it over and over again if it makes the little ones happy, am I right?  I love this set because we get to act out the story with the different pieces rather than just singing.  I’ve even caught Little doing it himself without prompting, which is a major win!  I love that he gets to use his little imagination with these sets.

So, you want to make your own?  Here’s what you’ll need:

Supplies

  • A felt board (I recommend making your own since it’s so simple)
  • Colorful Felt (specifically, orange, yellow, white, blue, black, & brown)
    • You can buy specific pieces at a local craft store, but if you want to make multiple sets, I recommend these Felt Fabric Squares from Amazon.  There are 40 12×12 pieces in all sorts of colors for just $16.  They are GREAT for projects like this and will last you a long time.
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Writing utensil (I used a pen for this project)

Directions

  • Draw shapes on felt*.
    • 5 rain drops on blue felt
    • 3 clouds on white felt
    • Spider on black felt
      • Plus 2 eyes & mouth with white
    • Sun rays on orange felt
    • Sun center on yellow felt
    • Water spout on brown felt
  • Cut shapes out of felt
  • Glue eyes and mouth onto spider
  • Glue sun center to rays
  • Enjoy!

*Not an artist, or just not interested in free-handing all these shapes?  No worries!  I’ve added a FREE printable stencil guide for you so all you need to do is print, cut, and trace! Just click HERE for the PDF stencils you can download and print at home!  Let me know if you use them; I would love to see how you use them!
