And just like that, I think it’s safe to say that Fall is finally upon us here in North Carolina.  The weather is perfect – mild/warm days and cool mornings and nights.  I’ve had many many [decaf] lattes, I’m wearing my ankle boots and chunky scarves and life is really good.

Today, I’m sharing a simple project that is really more of an updated project, but one that I am really pleased with – a simple DIY fall wreath that you can easily put together in an afternoon with the right supplies.

Truth be told, I originally made this wreath way back in 2011 when Hubs and I were engaged.

I still liked the leaves, but the bow was moving on past its time.  Here is what the original wreath looked like when I started.  See?  It’s not terrible.  But it’s not great either.

My sister recently stopped by and we did some work to her Fall wreath, which had me feeling totally inspired to spruce up my own.  When I found an old bunch of Fall colored flowers in our craft cabinet, I knew I’d found the right supplies.  I whipped out the glue gun and got right to work during nap time.  I cannot reiterate enough how simple this project is.

I’ll walk you step by step the whole way – from the very beginning (which I don’t have photos of because that was so long ago…)

Easy DIY Fall Wreath

First things first.  You’ve got to get the right supplies.  Good news, you are almost guaranteed to be able to find everything you need at your local craft store.  And if you don’t find it there, there’s Amazon for that.

Supplies

  • 1 grapevine wreath
    • any size will do depending on your space
  • Strand of leaf garland
  • Fall colored flowers
    • I think the craft stores technically call these “bushes”, but they look more like bouquets to me
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors (or pliers) to cut the garland into pieces
  • Burlap
    • Either burlap as-is if you want to make your bow, or you can buy a pre-made bow.  Either will do.  I bought mine from Hobby Lobby.

Directions

  • Cut the leaf garland into smaller bunches, making sure to leave some of the “stem”.  You’ll want to save this part for Step 2.  I recommend leaving at least 3 or so leaves to a bunch.  Do not cut into individual leaves.
  • Using the “stems”, arrange the bunches of leaves around the wreath as desired, tucking the stems into the grapevine.  This will give you something to glue to the wreath without gluing your leaves down flat.
  • Use hot glue to secure leaves in place.
  • While the glue is drying, pull flower off of the stems.  Most of the time, these will come right off, but you might need to cut them.

  • Once the leaves have dried, arrange the flowers on the wreath to your preference.
  • Going one at a time, put hot glue on the bottom of each flower and press it to the wreath.
  • Hold each flower for 15-25 seconds on the wreath to make sure the hot glue has time to set.
  • Add your bow & enjoy!

I am really happy with how this turned out and I’m excited to use it for years to come to welcome friends and family to our home in the fall!  I think the brighter orange and red really make it pop and I really like how the burlap bow looks with it.

    1. Mary Leigh says:

I hope you are able to make one this season! It’s so festive on the door!

  33. I am very much a wreath person. And it depends on the mood I’m in and the style I’m going for that season. But I love this as it’s simple, frugal, and embraces the beginning of fall (for most of us at least).

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Same! I like so many different kinds of wreaths – if I have enough space, I would have multiple for each season!

  34. Nice idea! I like the ones with the wreath around. I’m not a crafty person. Your direction are great for me 😊. Thanks for sharing 😊

    1. Mary Leigh says:

This one was so simple! The grapevine wreaths really hold up well so that you really just have to glue the rest on!

  35. This wreath is absolutely adorable and perfect for thanksgiving! I’m going to have to make this! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Absolutely; I’m glad you liked it! I appreciate you stopping by!

  37. That looks so cute and festive! Now I feel motivated to stop being lazy and make my own! Thanks for the idea!

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Thank you so much! I’m glad you like it!

  38. What a gorgeous yet simple idea! This looks like something you could easily pay $40 or more for, but DIYing it is both so much more cost-effective AND more fun! Thanks for the tutorial – pinning this too!

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Yes- wreaths can be SO expensive! It is fun to make your own when you have the time. Fortunately, this one doesn’t take long at all. It’s perfect when you want to do something crafty, but don’t have a ton of time!

  39. These are beautiful! I’m saving this for. Exit year! I love making my own things! So thank you!!

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Thank you so much! I really like how it turned out! It’s fun when I have a chance to make something that looks good for our home!

      Thank you so much!

  41. I’ve been wanting to buy a wreath but now I can just make my own 🙂

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Yes! It really is so easy and doesn’t take that long either if you have all the supplies!

  42. It´s really nice fall wreath. I´ve pinned your tutorial for next year´s use 😉

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Thank you so much! I hope you’ll be able to make one for yourself!

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Absolutely; I appreciate you stopping by!

  43. That’s an improvement for sure! So cute and looks so easy too. I love how you freshened up that little wreath. I’m a traditional girl when it comes to wreath, so yours is really my style. Nice job!

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Thank you! I think I tend to be more traditional with wreaths also and this one is a fun one!

  44. Beautiful! And easy to do. Thank you! (I would probably choose the premade bow, or a different fabric-I can’t stand the feel of burlap for very long, though it looks great on your wreath!)

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Thank you! I usually opt to make bows, but this one was so easy and pretty to me, it was worth the convenience!

  45. This is so cute!! I love it. I am usually a “buy a wreath” person, but I might try this one out. Thank you for such easy-to-read instructions.

    1. Mary Leigh says:

Hahahaha. I totally understand that! I tell Hubs all the time, DIY is great, but sometimes, I feel more like a good B[uy]IY! This really is so simple though if you are feeling crafty!

  46. I love this re-do of your Fall Wreath. It turned out great!

    1. Mary Leigh says:

      Thanks!

  47. This is so amazing and easy! I had to my wreath every year. You have inspired me though!
